Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendinitis is an overuse injury of the Achilles tendon, the band of tissue that connects calf muscles at the back of the lower leg to your heel bone. It causes pain along the back of the leg, normally near the heel.
Tips that help with Achilles Tendinitis:
- Rest – Always reduce or stop the activities that make the pain worse. Biking and swimming are low-impact activities that help you stay active while putting less stress the Achil-les tendon.
- Compression – Compression wraps can be used to reduce swelling and movement to the tendon.
- Ice – Put ice on the most painful areas to reduce pain. This can be done multiple times a day up to 20 minute at a time. Always discuss changes with your doctor.
Prevention is not always possible but these are some risk reducing steps:
- Stretching – Stretch each day before and after exercise, this helps your body maintain flexibility.
- Shoes – Make sure you choose shoes that support your foot and ankle.
- Increase activity gradually – Start exercise programs slowly and gradually, increase duration and intensity slowly.
- Cross- train – Alternate high impact activities with low impact activities to reduce stress when exercising.
